It is no question that thesis writing is an integral part of the academic requirements in Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Thus, preparation for the said requirement is a must. As educators, knowing this fact, when should we prepare our learners? Introducing how to write a Thesis or conduct an Action Research to Secondary 3 and 4 learners is an idea central in preparing them to become life-long learners.

Whilst there are diverse reasons to start writing a thesis at this stage, agreeably the most relevant is that research helps develop 21st Century Skills. Learners are asked to identify existing and suitable problems or issues in their surroundings. They, then, creatively and critically think of ways to solve those identified problems. A number of experiments, research surveys and interviews then address the issue. Finally, gathered data will be presented and interpreted and conclusions are drawn. Having mentioned this delicate process, the skills such as problem-solving, critical-thinking, creativity, information literacy, leadership and initiative will undeniably flourish.

Furthermore, writing a thesis is a great example of an authentic assessment wherein learners do not simply regurgitate what has been taught to them, instead they demonstrate understanding by solving real-life problems. In addition, this project encompasses various subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Technology, English and Social Studies. Knowledge acquired and skills developed from these subjects will be demonstrated. By doing this project, learners are actively involved in the learning process.

In spite of the benefits mentioned, some would still argue that the Myanmar education sector is still not ready, having just opened to current foreign trends and curricula. Lack of time, expertise and resources may be challenging for the learners too. On the contrary, this newly established relationship to other nations is a good chance to seek for assistance and resources. Many countries nowadays are investing on academic research papers. This is an opportunity for learners to propose relevant studies and receive training and workshops from foreign experts. It is also important to realize that time restriction will bring out the learners’ creativity in thinking strategies and methods to problem-solving. In a thesis, researchers always mention about the scope and limitations of their study. This proves that researchers can give suggestions and recommendations for other researchers who are interested in the same topic.

In conclusion, writing a thesis is essential in the teaching and learning process. It gives spark to a child’s curious mind and permits the learner to take a course of actions towards gaining answers. The dilemma only arises when limitations are reached. However, this can be seen as an initiative for exploration and an opening for other researchers to carry on redefining the issue. Accomplished works will then be great contributions in improving the country’s educational foundation. This clearly shows that writing a thesis in secondary level trains students to become problem solvers in the long run.
